She was born to Dr. Jeannie Drew and Rev. Charles Drew. Her mother is a teacher at an independent private school for girls in Manhattan, and her father is the senior pastor at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in New York City. She earned a degree in drama from University of Virginia's in 2002.

She started her career in high school, for being the voice artist of hit series Daria. She made her professional stage debut in 2001 as Juliet in Romeo and Juliet at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey.
