Barbara Sukowa was born and brought up in Breman, Germany. She developed the interest in acting from the very young age and attended Max Reinhardt Seminar in Berlin to study acting.

Barbara Sukowa is a married woman. She tied the knot with Robert Longo in a private ceremony held in the presence of some friends and family. Her husband is the artist and director Roberto Longo. The duo has given a performance together as a singer. The couple is blessed with three sons. She was previously married to Hans-Michael Rehberg with whom she shares one of her sons. She shares her another son, Viktor with her ex-boyfriend Daniel Olbrychski. She is currently residing in Brooklyn, New York with her family.
